Abstract

The purposes of this study are as follows determine: (a) How can students' achievement in learning English be improved by the implementation of cooperative learning method? (b) How is cooperative learning applied in order to give the significant influences to the student’s achievement in learning English narrative text?. To answer these questions, the authors have conducted a study of 50 students of the 2nd at SMA Islam sultan Agung 3 Semarang as the sample. In this study the writer took samples of the II IPS 2 as an experimental class applied with cooperative learning method and II IPS 1 as a control class without cooperative learning method. The type of this study is experimental research combined with treatment, and this study uses quantitative data analysis techniques. The main instrument of the data collection in this study is test, pre test and post test. Pre test are used to determine how students’ achievement before having treatment, and post test are used to determine how students’ achievement after having treatment. Test used to measure students’ achievement between experimental class and control class whether increased significantly or not. From the results of the test calculations using SPSS, it is known that the average pre test of experimental class is 73.6 and the control class is 69.6. This means that the results of pre test of the students’ achievement both class were relatively similar, and then the average results after treatment given showing the average of post test of experimental class is 85.8 and for control class is 78.4. Based on the result above, the writer states that students’ achievement of the experimental class is significantly improved after having cooperative learning method and not for students' achievement from control class. The writer also claim if cooperative method is one of a good method to apply in teaching English especially to teach narrative text.
