Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of using waste of plastic bottle or Polyethylene terephtalate (PET) as bitumen modifier. To beable to mixed with bitumen, plastic bottle were burned and crushed to become 425 µm size of fine particles. 5% to 20% PET in increment of 5%, were added to the bitumen and mixing at 160OC mixing temperature and 30 minutes of mixing time. To the fourth of PET and bitumen mixtures, here in after called PET-Modified Bitumen or PET-MB, consistency tests were conducted consist of penetration and softening point test as well as specific gravity test. From the result of penetration and softening point test can be determined penetration index (PI) value. PI is the value of temperature susceptibility of the binder. The higher PI value the highest temperature susceptible of binder. The results of penetration and softening point test show that the highest PET content in bitumen have the highest of PI value, and the less susceptible to the change of temperature. In this study, modification with 20% PET have the highest PI value is -2. 20% PET-MB then use as binder ofSMA bitumen mixtures. Marshall test shows the mixture using PET-MB as binder have higher stability compare to the mixture using original bitumen of binder. It can be conducted that PET is feasible to use as bitumen modified.
