Abstract

In translating the subtitles of a movie, translators not only have to translate the source language into the closest meaning in the target language, translator need a translation procedure in translating the movie where the translator will make some changes. There are several things that will be considered by translator in translation procedure, such as grammatical structure, expansion and reduction words. This study focused at analyzing the translation procedure which is part of Peter Newmark's (1988) theory. The aims of this study are to find the translation procedures applied in translating subtitles of movie LUCA (2021) and to find the most dominant procedure applied in translating subtitles of movie LUCA (2021). Moreover, this study used qualitative methods in analyzing data collected from the movie LUCA (2021). Based on the analysis, several translation procedures found in this study. They are literal translation 73 data, transposition 452 data, reduction 229 data, modulation 90 data, transference 55 data, through translation 23 data, expansion 29 data, couplet 165 data, naturalization 10 data, compensation 18 data, synonymy 6 data, functional equivalent 27 data, and cultural equivalent 20 data. Moreover, the most procedure applied is transposition. Transposition became the most dominant procedure as in transposition procedure the translator would change the grammatical structure from the source language into translation that is suitable grammatically in the target language.
