Abstract

This study points out the social class and hierarchy in the novel as depicted in the novel and how it impacts the main character of the novel namely Rachel Chu. This study used theory of social class by Tan Ern Ser and the analysis is acquired using qualitative research method while the result is written descriptively. This study analyze the data collected from dialogues, monologues, and narratives in the novel. To collect the data, the researcher used few steps: reading the novel, identifying the data and classifying the data from the object of the study. The result of the analysis points out that there are three social classes as depicted in the novel: upper class, middle class, and lower class. Because of the social class phenomenon in Singapore, Rachel Chu experience many disadvantage for example social discrimination, bullying, and limitation to choose marital partner.
