Abstract

This final project is entitled Individualism in the Romanticism Era as Reflected n Tess of the D 'Urbervilles: .A Psychoanalytic Approach. It describes a psychoanalytic approach which is used to understand the individuals complexity. Moreover, this study is a unique one by exploring the traditions and customs of an industrial society in Europe. There are changes in cultural values which were described in Tess's personality as the main character. The changes give significance influence in the social structure. The object of the study is Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles. The writer uses descriptive qualitative analysis. The data of the study are m the form of phrases, sentences, and dialogues. The data are gathered by reading the novel, identifying, and reporting. The analysis is done in several techniques inciuding exp·sing, explaining, and interpreting. The result of the study is the use of psvchoanalytic approach to understand the personality of Tess D'Urberviiies in making every decision in her {fe. By using this of approach, the purpose of her life will be revealed. Moreover, the individualisr as a one of the culture's characteristics in the era of romanticism has influenced the life of Tess D'Urbervilles.
