Abstract

Peter Pan (1953) is animated movie work by Disney. The movie had strong fantasy and adventure aspect in it, which could be enjoyed by all ages. However, there are racism issues found in this movie, to be specific, towards Native American. Along the adventurous journey in wonderland, we can see a group of Native American that caught the main characters and the lost boys, which will lately become their friends. The issue is on how the movie portrayed Native American as this group in this movie. The movie shows negative messages and stereotypical aspects as a portrayal of Native American, which reflected on this group that appeared in Disney’s Peter Pan To make this research, a descriptive qualitative method was implemented. There are primary and secondary data, which were gained by watching the movie, reading the movie script, and from external source that available to read. An identification, classification, and simplification of the data were conducted to give this research progressions. Throughout the analysis, the result showed that racism against Native American portrayed by negatively depicts native American in the movie. Furthermore, there are only two out of three levels of racism found in Disney’s Peter Pan. Those levels are Personally Mediated Racism and Internalized racism. The level isn’t included are Institutionalized racism, as it’s defined racism corelate to institutional legal opportunity. Keywords: Racism, Peter Pan, Indian, Native American, Stereotype, Disney
