Abstract
This study analyzed the anxiety and defense mechanism experienced by the main character in Joker movie by Todd Philips. Mechanism usually use in the face of danger. Some people usually face dangerous situations by using defense mechanisms. This study aimed to describe types of anxiety faced and defense mechanism as depicted in Joker movie. This study used a descriptive qualitative technique of research in analyzing the data. The data were collected from the movie in the form of prologues, monologues, dialogues, and narration. There were several steps which were used in order to collect the necessary data, such as watching the movie, reading the movie script, identifying the data, classifying the data, and reducing the data. Through Joker movie which was produced by Todd Philips in 2019, this study found the anxiety of the main character. In addition, defense mechanism consist of four types. There are: repression, projection, displacement, and fantasy. Keywords: Anxiety, Defense Mechanism, Joker
