Abstract
Indraswari, Pradita. 2014. “The Puritans’ Protestant Ethics as Reflected in The Main Characters of The Scarlet Letter Novel”. A Final Project, English Literature Program, College of Languages, Sultan Agung Islamic University. The first advisor: Didik Murwantono, S.S., M.Hum and the second advisor: Destary Praptawati, S.S., M.Hum. Keywords : Protestant Ethics, American Culture, the Puritans In the nineteenth century, the concept of Protestant ethics had been embedded into American industrial society. Some values, such as hard work, work for glorify God, had competitively been adapted as cultural values in order to bring about the concept of American Dream, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The main objectives of this study are finding out and analyzing about the Puritans’ traditions as reflected in the main characters of The Scarlett Letter novel. Moreover, it is used to figure out the social changes in American society from traditional agricultural society to industrial society. This undergraduate thesis is under English Literature discipline. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method which embraces the primary and secondary data. The primary data refers to any citation of phrase, sentence that found in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter. Meanwhile the secondary data are cited from some sources such as books, articles, journals, and internet. The study covers several techniques included exposing, explaining, and interpreting. It had supported by social change theory which are used to understand the Puritans’ society and its characters. The result of this study is the Puritans’ society still kept their tradition among AmericaÄ hp@�� �� a� �˜� �� �� ion had been implicated from generation to generation as American cultural values. Therefore, the concept of the Protestant Ethic still exists in New England. Moreover Puritan values also gave impacts toward the economy, social, religion and political life of Americans.
