Abstract
The social environment highly influences how individuals create their character. Charlie is a man who has mental retardation that has to struggle in attaining his dream in the middle of unfair treatment from his society. His social life makes Charlie has to strive hard to control his life in positive ways. This study aims to describe striving for superiority and to explain creative power on Charlie’s character reflected in Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon. This study uses Individual Psychology theory proposed by Alfred Adler; the theory is chosen to answer the portrayal of Charlie’s character in reaching and controlling his dreams in predicaments. This study used qualitative method. There were four steps in collecting the data, those were reading the novel, identifying the data, classifying the data and also reducing the data. The data analysis was presented descriptively in this study. The result of this study shows two points. First, the portrayal of striving for superiority on Charlie’s character; there are two aspects influencing striving for superiority. Those are feeling of inferiority and motivation. Charlie’s feeling of inferiority is like weakness in writing, reading, and remembering that trouble him deeply in thinking whereas Charlie’s motivation comes from his family and social environment that has treated him unfairly. The feeling of inferiority and motivation encourage Charlie in striving for superiority by being a smart person. Second, the portrayal of creative power on Charlie’s character as an effort in striving for superiority; Charlie’s creative power is portrayed when Charlie prefers to think positively in taking an action toward a problem and never give up to keep learning even though he has gotten what he wants. Charlie’s striving for superiority and creative power make his dreams come true until he could conduct a research entitled “The Effect of Algernon” which harm his life. Key words: Flowers for Algernon, Creative Power, Striving for Superiority
