Abstract

This study concerns on the analysis of racial discrimination portrayed in Dido’s character in Belle 2013 movie by Amma Asante. The main character, Dido, is a mixed race daughter from John Lindsay, a British Royal Navy Officer and Maria Belle, an African woman enslaved in West Indies. Dido is a highborn child; nevertheless she gets discrimination by William Murray, as Lord Mansfield, and his wife because she is Mullato and illegitimate woman. She suffers from discrimination that happens in Kenwood House. This study purposes to know how racial discrimination happens in Dido as the main character and how racial discrimination gives the psychological impact to the main character. The study used descriptive qualitative method to find the answer for the problem formulations by using Belle 2013 movie as a primary data. These primary data consisted of sentences, prologues, and monologues, whereas the secondary data were taken from journals, articles, essays, and thesis. In short, this study shows the racial discrimination and the psychological impact of racial discrimination that portrayed in the Belle 2013 movie. The racial discrimination is clearly described that the white people do discrimination to the black people and it gives the psychological impact to the main character like on mental health (e.g. depression, anxiety, psychosis or paranoia, stress, and post-traumatic stress) and general well-being (e.g., lower self-esteem, lower life satisfication, quality or life and low happiness).
