Abstract

This study describes conflicts between classes reflected in Wuthering Heights novel. There are two classes based on Ralf Dahrendorf’s class stratification view, those are superordinate and subordinate class. The division of classes is based on authority ownership. With the difference of authority presence in each class, the interests of two classes are in contrast. As the result, conflicts happen. This study focuses on descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study are in the form of dialogue and narrations. The data are gathered by reading Wuthering Heights novel, identifying, classifying, and reducing the data. The data themselves are the primary data and the secondary data. The primary data are taken from Wuthering Heights novel; meanwhile the secondary data are quoted from the internet, articles, books, journals, e-books, and e-journals. The analysis is done in several techniques including analyzing and reporting the data. The result of the study explains that the superordinate class which is picturized as rich, has authority, and respected struggles to defend its position by rejecting the subordinate’s togetherness and presence along with them, giving harsh and cruel words and statement to the subordinate, and treating the subordinate bad. In contrast, the subordinate class which is described as poor, has low education level, and has no authority, fights to gain authority by trying to seem strong in front of the superordinate, treating the superordinate cruelly, doing sly tricks to reach authority, and doing bad manner after gaining authority. As the impact of the conflicts, eventually the changing of authority’s ownership happens: the subordinate class success to gain authority, so his position becomes the superordinate class. On the contrary, the superordinate class becomes the subordinate class as the result of their authority’s losing in their own dwellings. Keywords: Class, Class Stratification, Authority, Conflict, Ralf Dahrendorf
