Abstract
This study examines mainly on American romanticism characteristics. Moreover in psychologically, it focuses on the Consciousness and Unconsciousness aspects. The purposes of this study are to get more understanding American romanticism characteristics and Psychoanalysis aspects that reflected on the main character. This object of the study is Solomon Northup in Twelve Years A Slave Narrative of Solomon Northup. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by reading the novel, identifying the data, classifying the data, and reducing the data. The data analyzing included several techniques such as giving statements, describing the events and quoting from monologues and narration. In analyzing the data, this research used American romanticism and Psychoanalysis theory to examine American romanticism characteristics and the main character in Psychology aspects. This research finds several things. The first things are the American romanticism characteristics that reflected in the main character in this object, Solomon Northup. Solomon reflected a lot of American romanticism characteristics such as Self-Awareness, Nature and Self-Reliance. He lived-closed to nature with believing him self in facing the problems of life in the romantic era. This research also finds the psychoanalysis of the main character such as consciousness and unconsciousness parts for escape from slavery. In short, slavery always exists but he struggles for fighting against the slavery never ends. Keywords: Psychoanalysis, American Romanticism, Self-Awareness, Nature, Self-Reliance
