Abstract
This study analyzed Charlotte character as the representative of women condition in 19th century reflected in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. In the 19th century, women were weak creature. It made them got limitations on their life. The aim of this study was to find out how Charlotte’s marriage could be a solution in raising her social status. All of the data of this study analyzed by descriptive qualitative technique. The data were in the form of prologues, monologues, dialogues, narration which were collected from the novel. There were several steps in order to collect the data, as reading the novel, identifying and classifying the data. This study found that women were weak, and marriage was considered as the solution. This topic can be seen in the Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen through Charlotte character. Charlotte was the representative of women condition in the 19th century. Women could not get rights as men get. As the result, they could not do many things. They could not help their condition and also their family. Based on the findings and discussion, this study found that marriage was the only way for women to overcome their weak condition. Charlotte reflected that she could increase her social status through her marriage to Mr.Collins. She got privileges that she could not get before, like as a comfortable house with wide garden, connections, carriage, dress, and etc. Her condition reflected that marriage was the proper way for women at that time.
