Abstract
Government through the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education is now encouraging and facilitating lecturers, researchers and scientists to publish their research papers in international journals especially in the reputable ones as indexed by Scopus or Thomson Reuters. However, it is not easy to develop writing skills especially writing in a foreign /second language since there are many factors which may contribute to the success or failure of a foreign/second language learning. One of them is attitude, as Gardner (1985) suggested that learners’ attitude towards the language will impact the result of a foreign language learning. This study focused on the attitude of non-English lecturers at Sultan Agung Islamic University (UNISSULA) Semarang towards writing academic papers in English. Sixty six respondents were drawn randomly as sample from the population of around 380 non-English lecturers of various disciplines at the university. Data on the attitude were collected using Likert-typed questionnaire of 5 scales from Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Neutral, Agree and Strongly Agree covering behavioural, cognitive and emotional aspects of attitude. The data were statistically analyzed and compared to see whether there were differences on their attitude towards English academic writing based on variable of gender. The research found that non English lecturers had positive attitude towards writing academic papers in English both for male and female respondents.
