Abstract
The aim of the study was to know the students’ writing ability in descriptive text by using Semantic Mapping strategy for the eight grade students in SMP Sultan Agung 4 Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019. The design of the study was experimental research. The researcher used two classes as the sample they were: VIII A3 as the experimental class and VIII A4 as the control class. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument the researcher collected the data from VIII A2 as the try out class. To collect the data, the researcher used two kinds of test: pre-test and post-test. Then, the data from those tests were analyzed by using SPSS for Windows version 16.0 to find out the result of those tests. The result of t-test showed that Levene’s test with sig. 0.116 more than 0.05. It means that the data were homogeneous. The sig. (2-tiled) showed .001 less than .05. It means that there was significant difference between the control class and the experimental class. It could be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that teaching writing using Semantic Mapping strategy could improve the students’ writing ability. Keywords: Semantic Mapping Strategy, Writing Descriptive Text, Experimental Research.
